SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. -- A six-year-old boy was killed and three other people were hurt when an SUV went off the highway, careened 20 feet down an embankment and hit a tree.

The crash happened near Norwood, north of Telluride, Sunday night.

Deputies said a ten-year-old girl was cut from the SUV and flown to St Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. The 30-year-old mother of the six-year-old was also cut from the SUV. She was flown to a hospital in Denver. Another woman, the 23-year-old driver, was taken to Montrose Memorial Hospital. A third child, a two-year-old girl, was not hurt.

Investigators haven't determined why the SUV went off Highway 145.

"Fatalities are always horrible, but when a child is killed, it’s particularly tragic," Sheriff Bill Masters said. "On behalf of all of the agencies that responded to this incident, our thoughts are with the family at this most difficult time.”

Deputies said the group was believed to have visited relatives in the Norwood area and were returning home to Ridgway and Montrose.
