Victims In Fatal I-70 Truck Crash From Denver Area

Coroner Identifies Man, Woman Killed In Grand Junction Accident

Authorities have identified two people who were killed when a tractor-trailer rig crashed and exploded on Interstate 70 in Grand Junction last week.

They were the driver, Peter Baumann, 35, of Aurora and a passenger, Yvette Anderson, 33, of Denver.

Police believe Baumann fell asleep at the wheel and the truck drifted into the right-side guardrail and slammed into an overpass. The truck burst into flames and knocked out a support pillar beneath the overpass.

An 11-mile section I-70 was closed for nine hours. The overpass has been shut down for repairs but traffic is allowed on I-70 under the bridge.

Police said the truck was carrying a form of bleach and other cargo. It was owned by Utah-based DATS Trucking and was heading to Utah.

The Mesa County coroner said Baumann and Anderson both died of multiple blunt-force injuries, and also suffered burns. Their bodies were found in the wreckage after the fire was extinguished.
