RIVERVIEW, Fla. - A Florida man accused of attacking his girlfriend with a metal object is dead after a woman who heard the attack shot and killed him in an apparent act of self-defense as he turned and attacked her.
According to a preliminary investigation, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesperson Larry McKinnon said Daniel S. Robertson, 56, of Brandon, Fla., caused significant damage to his girlfriend’s apartment as he broke in around 6 a.m. Saturday and began attacking her.
A woman visiting her boyfriend next door to the apartment, Vickie Rock, 50, of Riverview, Fla., heard glass and the door breaking as Robertson allegedly forced his way into the home, as well as screaming, McKinnon said.
Rock armed herself with a .45-caliber handgun, went outside and said she saw the man beating his girlfriend with the metal object.
When the Rock tried to intervene, the man turned and began attacking her, she said. The woman sustained several facial injuries before opening fire and hitting the man at least once.
Responding deputies found the man dead in a parking lot. His body was turned over to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Both woman sustained facial injuries in the altercations, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening. McKinnon said witnesses have corroborated the descriptions of the incident by the women involved.
Detectives are conferring with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed in the shooting death, but Rock has been released from custody with no charges, pending the investigation.
