Toddler seriously injured after man beat him with kitchen utensil, police say

Man faces neglect, battery charges

WARSAW, Ind. - A 2-year-old boy was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital late last week in serious condition after his mother's boyfriend beat him with a kitchen utensil, police said.

Bradley Waikel, 24, was arrested on felony neglect and battery charges last Thursday.

Neighbors told police that the toddler's mother left the boy with her boyfriend while she went to a job interview.

When she got back home, she found the boy unconscious on the floor and rushed him to a hospital, police said.

"There was actually two major injuries, one to the back of the head that was constituted as a skull fracture, as well as a secondary injury to the groin area that was quit e extensive as well," Kosciusko County sheriff's Sgt. Chad Hill told ABC 57 in South Bend.

Waikel was held late last week in the Kosciusko County Jail on $100,000 bond.
