LONDON - A beaming Prince William and his wife, Kate, have shown their newborn baby boy to the world.
Kate carried the future monarch outside St. Mary's Hospital in central London Tuesday so he could be photographed by the waiting press. He doesn't have a name yet, but his first moment outside the hospital will be replayed forever.
Prince William then took his turn holding the infant in public and answered a few questions from the throng of reporters and photographers who had camped out side the hospital's doors for days.
"Well, he's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure," Prince William said. "He's a big boy. Quite heavy. We're still working on a name so we'll have that as soon as we can."
"He's got her looks, thankfully," William added. "He's got a little more hair than me, thank God."
Kate said William has already changed nappies and is "very very good" at it.
The couple said the birth has been "very emotional."
"It's a special time. I think any parent ... probably knows what this feeling feels like," Kate said.
"I'll remind him of his tardiness when he's a bit older. Because I know how long you all sat out here," Prince William said to the photographers. "Hopefully, you can go back to normal now and we can go look after him."
The young family then put the baby in a carseat and drove off. They are expected to head to an apartment at Kensington Palace.
The world's first glimpse of the boy who is expected to be the first king of the 22nd century came after 10 hours of labor and one night in the hospital.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge introduced the world to their son on the exact same steps where William emerged in 1981 when Charles and Diana showed off only the top of William's head. The couple's first son will be third in line for the throne.
On Tuesday, Prince Charles visited the same hospital, and called his grandson marvelous.
But the very first visitors weren't even royal.
Arriving by taxi grandpa Michael and grandma Carole Middleton. Afterward, Carole told the press her first grandson was beautiful.
