Belgium attacks: No flight delays at DIA

The attacks in Belgium do not appear to be causing flight delays at Denver International Airport. No travel advisories or warnings have been issued by the U.S. State Department. 

“We have not been directed by TSA or the Department of Homeland Security to make any changes to our procedures," airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said. “However, as always, as a major international airport, we always share a heightened sense of awareness following an event like this.”

The Department of Homeland Security tweeted that the department "will not hesitate to adjust our security posture, as appropriate, to protect the American people," if the conditions warrant that.

CNN reports airports across the country, like in Washington and Boston, are increasing security or at least heightening the alert. Aviation security expert Jeff Price said on Denver7 at 6 a.m. that everyone should continue on with travel because for now, this is a localized incident.

Price added that entryways to airports can be soft targets because people there are not required to go through security. While security could be relocated to those locations, there will always be a crowd somewhere. Price suggests the answer is adding law enforcement to public areas but everyone should have a healthy sense of awareness.

There are no direct flights between Brussels and Denver.

However, Brussels Airlines does have a code share agreement with United Airlines, so Denver travelers can book travel on United Airlines to Washington Dulles, then fly Brussels Airlines to Belgium.

Brussels Airlines is also part of the Lufthansa Group, so Denver travelers could fly to Germany, then on to Brussels via Lufthansa.

Brussels Airlines wrote on its website:

Due to two explosions at Brussels Airport this morning, March 22nd, the airport is closed until further notice. As a consequence all flights to and from Brussels Airport are cancelled today.

Passengers holding a ticket for a Lufthansa Group flight (Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Germanwings) between today and 28 March to/from/via Brussels can rebook or refund their ticket for free.

Passengers who booked their ticket via a travel agency are kindly asked to contact the agency for their rebooking or refund.

United Airlines issued the following statements:

The United family is deeply saddened by the tragedies in Brussels earlier today, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. The safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority, and all of our employees are safe and accounted for at this time.

We had two arrivals at Brussels International Airport this morning. Flight 950 from Washington Dulles arrived at 7:01 a.m. and customers deplaned normally at the gate. Our second flight - flight 999 from Newark Liberty - was rerouted to a remote location and our customers and crew have deplaned. All remaining flights to and from Brussels International have been suspended until further notice from local authorities.
