Tech-related abilities dominate LinkedIn's list of important skills that got people hired in 2013

DENVER - Programming, social media and other digital skills were the keys that opened more doors for job seekers during 2013, according to business-focused social networking site LinkedIn.

The social network published a blog indicating that social media marketing was the single "hottest" skill, based on their analysis of the skills and employment history of more than 259 million members' profiles. In fact, the top four skills on the list were tech-related.

"If the skills you have on your LinkedIn profile fit one of the categories below, there's a good chance that you started a new job or were approached by a recruiter about an open position in the past year," blog author Sohan Murthy wrote.

The top ten skills on LinkedIn's list were:

- Social media marketing

- Mobile development

- Cloud and distributed computing

- Perl/Python/Ruby

- Statistical analysis and data mining

- User interface design

- Digital and online marketing

- Recruiting

- Business development/relationship management

- Retail payment and information systems
