BROOKLYN, N.Y. - A 19-year-old man with a passion for flying remote-controlled model helicopters was killed Thursday when blades from the model helicopter he was flying struck him in the head, scalping and killing him.
Roman Piozek, Jr. of Queens, N.Y., was flying the helicopter in Dalvert Vaux Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. , the Wall Street Journal Metropolis reported.
The victim was with his father at the time of the accident, a law enforcement official said. The park is a favorite among model helicopter enthusiasts.
Piozek's Facebook page is full of photos of him attending model helicopter events.
A spokesman for the Muncie, Ind.-based Academy of Model Aeronautics says he believes Pirozek's death is only the second death caused by a remote control helicopter in the United States.
