91-year-old cancer survivor finishes Rock ā€˜n' Roll San Diego Marathon

SAN DIEGO - Cancer survivor Harriette Thompson completed her latest marathon in record timing at the tender age of 91.

Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina, finished the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon May 31 in 7 hours, 7 minutes, 42 seconds. Her average pace was 16 minutes and 20 seconds per mile. According to USA Track and Field, Thompson shattered the former marathon record for a 90-94-year-old woman of 8:53:08.

“It wasn’t until around the 17th mile that I was going uphill and I was thinking, ‘Oh, I wonder if I’m gonna make this,’ ” Thompson told the Charlotte Observer. “But the last few miles I didn’t mind at all.”

Thompson ran with her son Brenny, 55, which is the fourth time the duo has completed the 26.2 mile race together. Six days earlier Harriette and her husband, Sydnor, 90, completed a 5K (3.2 miles) on Memorial Day.

A grandmother of 10, Thompson completed her first marathon when she was 76-years-old. Before running the San Diego marathon for the 15th time in the past 16 years, she was given a special introduction and posed for a picture with 2014 Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi.

“I can’t believe how big a deal they’re making over me,” Thompson told the newspaper. “I felt like a queen for the day.”
