DASH Diet, TLC diet, Mayo Clinic diet top this year's best diets and weight loss plans

If you made a New Year's resolution to lose weight and you're looking for a new diet plan to get you motivated, the U.S. News and World Report has released a list of the best overall diets.

At the top was the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) developed by the National Institutes of Health.

The key component of it is limiting sodium intake and eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. One thing that set the DASH diet apart is that it doesn't cut out or extremely restrict certain foods.

The panel weighing the different diets looked for plans that were easy to follow, nutritious and safe. But the diets also needed to help you lose weight and fight diabetes and heart disease.
