It was 19 years ago this week that 14 firefighters died on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs.
14 people died on Storm King Mountain. This signs directs visitors to the left for the memorial to the two firefighters who died at the helispot. The trail to the right takes visitors to the memorials of the 12 hotshots and smokejumpers.
Steep stairs have been installed to help visitors climb the mountain. Firefighters had no help and were carrying 30 to 60 pounds of gear.
It's remarkable how an area devastated by wildfire can be so green.
At the top of the rise, you'll see trees covered in t-shirts with other memorials including caps, sunglasses, baseballs, gloves and scarves.
Down a dangerously steep is six crosses honoring Tami Bickett, Levi Brinkley, Jon Kelso, Rob Johnson, Bonnie Holtby and Don Mackey. Here you see a pair of skis left at Brinkley's cross.
