DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- Investigators are trying to identify human remains that were found in the San Juan National Forest in southwest Colorado.
The Durango Herald reports U.S. Forest Service workers found a skull in a rugged and remote area east of Pagosa Springs on Tuesday. A grid search turned up 69 points of interest, and 52 items were collected, including pieces of clothing, a pair of shoes and sunglasses.
Archuleta County Undersheriff Tonya Hamilton says it's unclear how long the remains had been in the area.
The area where the remains were found was remote, rough and heavily wooded, and would not have made a good camping site.
A forensic examination is planned in Durango on Tuesday.
