Colorado Springs Police make arrest in murder of pregnant woman, Lakeisha Jones; Baby still critical

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Police have arrested a man accused of shooting and killing his pregnant wife in Colorado Springs on Monday.

Officers said they arrested Andre Jones, 32, on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Jones is accused of shooting Lakeisha Jones, 32, at the Summit Apartments.

The suspect and victim were in the process of getting a divorce in El Paso County and a hearing was scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, according to court records obtained by the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Firefighters were initially called to the apartment building just before 9:30 a.m. on an "urgent" medical call, according to Colorado Springs Police spokeswoman Barbara Miller. When they arrived, they found a woman had been shot.

A firefighter-paramedic, believing the woman was in danger, heroically dragged her to a safe location while performing life-saving measures, authorities said.

Lakeisha, who was in the third trimester of pregnancy, was taken to Memorial Hospital. She died, but doctors were able to deliver the baby via emergency C-section.

The infant was still in critical condition on Tuesday.

Lakeisha had petitioned for divorce at the end of August.
