Search For Mountain Hiker Under Way

Man Overdue On Hike Between Mt. Evans, Mt. Bierstadt

Searchers are looking for an overdue hiker between Mt. Evans and Mt. Bierstadt -- both 14,000-foot peaks west of Denver.

The Alpine Rescue Team was called in early Thursday morning after the unidentified hiker failed to return to his car, which was parked on Mt. Evans.

The solo hiker is Robert "Eric" Chandler, 47, from Mississippi, the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said. A deputy said the man has hiked in the same area in the past but was not believed to be an experienced hiker.

"Right now the plan is to locate the individual," said Bill Barwick of Alpine Rescue. "It's a search, not a resuce at this point."

Five search teams were looking for the man Thursday afternoon.

The KMGH-TV helicopter, Airtracker 7, was called in to help search for the missing man.
