Posh Prison Cells Have Computers, On-Demand Movies

$2.5 Mil. Spent On Technology For Centennial Correctional Facility Inmates

Inmates at the Centennial Correctional Facility are getting a lot of high-tech gear in their cells.

The prison has installed a high-tech kiosk in each of the 948 cells.

The kiosks include a computer with a 20-inch monitor, built-in camera, 2.8 GHz processor, headset and 22 cable TV stations, according to KRDO-TV.

Officials told the TV station the inmates cannot access the internet, but they can use the computers to live chat with family and friends.

The cost? $2.5 million.

KRDO reported that the money came from the inmates’ canteen fund – money collected from prisoners’ purchases of candy bars, hygiene products, and over-the-counter medicines.

"We paid for it fully with cash funds. So there's no burden to the state taxpayers or the general fund,” Alison Morgan, assistant director of finance and administration with the Colorado Department of Corrections.
