A political website says Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is one of the top five picks to be Hillary Clinton's running mate.

TheHill.com named its top five as three senators, one cabinet member and one governor -- Hickenlooper.

"Some in Clintonworld say the Colorado governor's name should be on any short list,' TheHill wrote. "For starters, a win in Colorado would cement the race for Clinton. Hickenlooper has also been a loyal soldier to Clinton during the primary, particularly when his state voted for [Bernie] Sanders by nearly 20 percentage points."

TheHill says if Hickenlooper "doesn't get a nod for VP, Clinton will likely consider him for a cabinet position, should she be elected."

"I think the fact that he's not a career politician actually makes him unique,” said Colorado Democratic Party chair Rick Palacio.

"Being governor was his first time as a Democratic office holder, so he's pretty late to party politics in his life and has a lot of broad outreach to the business community," said Seth Masket, a political science professor at the University of Denver.

The governor's spokeswoman, Kathy Green, told Denver7, "The governor is focused on his job here in Colorado, which includes job creation, improving education and the rest of his agenda. We will leave speculation about national politics to others."

Denver7 asked the Clinton campaign about the report but workers declined to comment.

Denver7 also asked the Colorado GOP for its response. We were provided with the following statement:

"Gov. Hickenlooper's steadfast support for Obamacare and its skyrocketing premiums and cancelled health insurance policies would make him an ideal running mate for Hillary Clinton," said Colorado GOP Chairman Steve House.

"Gov. Hickenlooper oversaw the collapse of Colorado's Obamacare co-op and the cancellation of 112,000 health insurance policies while defending the merits of a failing law that has sent health insurance costs soaring for middle class Coloradans. Even worse, under Gov. Hickenlooper's leadership middle class Coloradans have seen stagnant wage growth making the increasing health insurance costs even more unbearable."

"If Hillary Clinton wants a governor who will continue to advocate for policies that increase the cost of healthcare, attack our Second Amendment rights, and expand big government, she has her man in Gov. Hickenlooper."
