DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakers have killed a bill to withhold state funds from so-called "sanctuary cities" that protect immigrants from deportation.

The bill's demise on Wednesday followed a court appearance by a Peruvian immigrant who is living in a Quaker meeting house in Denver to avoid deportation.

Ingrid Encalada Latorre went to a suburban Denver court as part of her effort to fight a deportation order. Supporters' fears that she would be detained by U.S. immigration agents went unrealized.

At the statehouse, majority Democrats on a House committee voted to defeat the Republican-backed bill.

They cited a federal judge's injunction last month against President Donald Trump's attempt to withhold federal funding from "sanctuary cities."

Opponents note that the term "sanctuary cities" has no legal definition.
