DENVER – Millions of people learn their identity has been stolen every year. Identity theft can strike everyone. State Rep. Cole Wist, R-Arapahoe County, and his wife had their identities stolen three years ago.

“We’re still dealing with it,” he told Anne Trujillo on this weekend’s Politics Unplugged. “Three years later we still have to have special numbers to file our tax returns so it’s still an ongoing issue that we struggle with every year.”

Rep. Wilson is the sponsor of House Bill 1128 which mandates that businesses and the government alert people within 30 days of a security breach that their information has been stolen. The bill has already passed the State House and is now being considered  by the State  Senate.

“We all have a lot of information that is out in various databases and we know that if there is a breach of a data base, you have a substantial risk for having your identity stolen and property stolen and money stolen,” he said. “Time is really of the essence when you’re talking about those breaches.”

Politics Unplugged airs Sundays at 4:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Denver7.
