DENVER -- Colorado has many strong, female business leaders. Just not enough of them.
“Just 30 percent of businesses are women owned, yet we make up 50 percent of the workforce,” Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce CEO Kristen Blessman told Nicole Brady on this week’s Politics Unplugged. “We need to see some improvements there.”
Blessman says that’s why the Women’s Chamber exists.
“There is so much going on for women in the world of work and the workplace,” she said. “Whether they want to grow their businesses or their career, we're there to provide an environment that helps them succeed at that.”
Blessman says there have been advancements made recently on the wage gap between men and women, but there is still a big gap when it comes to women in the board room.
“We have 80 percent of consumer spending power and yet we are not represented on the board of directors,” Blessman said. “In Colorado we are 47th in the nation and some companies have zero women on the board of directors.”
