Lakewood police say a speeding driver was killed early Saturday when he lost control of his pickup truck and slammed into a tree.The crashed happened about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South Pierce Street, police said.The driver of a 1998 Chevrolet pickup was speeding north on Pierce when the pickup hit a curb at the intersection of West Cedar Avenue, police said. The truck left the roadway, striking several objects before slamming into a large tree in the middle of the front yard of a home at 190 S. Pierce St.The driver, who was the only person in the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity was still being confirmed by the coroners office on Saturday.Police said speed was a factor in the crash. It was unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to the wreck. Toxicology tests will be done by the coroners office as part of the autopsy, police said.
