A gunman died after shooting himself in the head at a woman's boutique in Cherry Creek North Monday morning, Denver police said.
The man entered Alicia, The Boutique at 3035 East Third Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Monday and showed a gun to a female clerk, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.
The clerk safely escaped and was running away from the store when she heard a gunshot, he said.
"We found one man in the store with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound (to the head)," Jackson said.
The unidentified man was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead, he said.
The Denver coroner was still working to confirm the dead man's identity Monday afternoon. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, said Denver Chief Deputy Coroner Michelle Weiss-Samaras.
The incident was initially reported as a robbery, but Jackson said police are still investigating what the gunman's motive was. Jackson said it does not appear that the man and the clerk knew one another.
No other injuries were reported.
The intersection of East Third Avenue and St. Paul Street was blocked off temporarily while police investigated the scene.
Alicia's just opened on Sept. 10, according to the Cherry Creek North shopping district website. The upscale boutique sells women's clothing and accessories.
