Police: Baby Drowned While Mom Bought Cigarettes, Wings

Boys' Father Serving In Afghanistan

A 23-year-old Colorado Springs woman faces possible felony child abuse charges following the death of her 9-month-old son in a bathtub.

Estella Toleafoa was arrested Wednesday after police were called to her apartment on South Chelton Road the day before.

Arriving officers found the baby unresponsive on a floor of the apartment with scalding burns and residue of his skin in the bathtub and on a wash cloth.

The El Paso County coroner ruled that Erich Tyler Jr. died from a combination of drowning and burns.

Toleafoa told police she put about 1 inch of water in the bathtub and left her 9-month-old and 2-year-old sons in the bathtub while she went out briefly for cigarettes and chicken wings.

She said when she returned about 10 minutes later, she found her 2-year-old standing in the bathroom and her 9-month-old floating face down in a tub filled with hot water.

The 2-year-old was not injured.

Toleafoa was booked for investigation of felony child abuse recklessly causing death to a child.

The boys' father is a Fort Carson soldier serving in Afghanistan.
