Police: 2 Women Tried To Drown Toddler In Toilet

Colorado Springs Child Found Unconscious, Not Breathing

Two Colorado Springs women were arrested Thursday, accused of trying to drown a 20-month-old child in the toilet, police said.

The child's mother, 19-year-old Samantha Salaz, and another caregiver, 50-year-old Mary Horsley, are being held on suspicion of attempted murder and felony child abuse.

Police said they were called to a home on North Farragut Avenue and East Van Buren Street just after 2 p.m. on the report that a child was unconscious and not breathing. Officers were told the child may have drowned in the toilet.

The child was transported to the hospital and is currently at the pediatric intensive care unit at Memorial Hospital, police said.

Investigators determined that the child suffered serious bodily injury that was not accidental, Colorado Springs police said.

The women are being held at the El Paso County jail.
