Pit bull wakes up deaf boy during house fire

INDIANAPOLIS - A pit bull named ACE was being hailed a hero after he alerted his 13-year-old sleeping owner to a fire at their home.

The fire happened at a home in the 6400 block of Perry Pines Court on Wednesday just after 1 p.m., officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department said.

Nick Lamb is deaf and told firefighters he didn’t have his hearing aids in. He said he was thankful that 2-year-old ACE started licking his face until he woke up.

"The fact that he knew something was wrong cause you couldn't smell that much smoke and he was in my room with me. The door was shut so he couldn't get out," Lamb said.

A cat named Pixie was also found by firefighters in the home. The cat was taken to the vet to be checked out but was believed to be OK.

IFD said the rest of the boy’s family was not home at the time of the fire. Lamb said this was the first summer he was old enough to stay home alone.

"I smelled smoke. I thought for a second someone was home and they did something wrong cooking and then I went downstairs, the whole house was covered in smoke. I covered my face and we ran out the back," Lamb said.

Lamb said ACE will be rewarded with plenty of treats.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the homeowner believes it was due to an electrical problem in the garage. Damage to the home was estimated at $175,000.
