The Aurora movie theater shooter has apparently been transferred to a prison in another state, but officials won't say where or why.

Adrienne Jacobson, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, said the move was part of an agreement with another prison to exchange inmates, which can happen for a variety of reasons. Jacobson says revealing James Holmes' location would thwart the purpose of the agreement.

The lack of information frustrated District Attorney George Brauchler, who prosecuted the case. He says victims have a right to know if the gunman is being housed in their state.

The shooter was housed in the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City, where he was heavily supervised. Then he was moved to the San Carlos Correctional Facility in Pueblo, where he had more contact with other inmates.

Holmes was sentenced in August 2015 to life in prison for killing 12 people and injuring 70 others when he opened fire on a crowded suburban Denver movie theater in July 2012.
