Work to permanently prevent rock slides in Glenwood Canyon is set to begin Tuesday.
The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports that the work, scheduled to be completed September 1, comes after a major rock slide Feb. 15.
"The work is very technical in nature and involves building four rockfall fences protecting two rock fall areas one at the location of the rock fall and one just west of the February rock slide area,” said Mike Fowler, contract CDOT Project Engineer. “Not only is the work technical but it is also physically challenging due to the difficult site conditions."
Technical crews will work Monday through Friday and potentially some weekends.
Drivers should expect 30 minute traffic holds, and potential full closures, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. starting May 10.
Driers should also expect a westbound one-lane closure through the project area near mile marker 124 . The one-lane closure is necessary for construction crews to stage equipment, trucks and materials needed for rockfall mitigation, CDOT said.
