Man dies in Estes Park standoff, but police don't know how yet

ESTES PARK, Colo. -- A man who barricaded himself in a strip mall was found dead after a standoff with police, but authorities don't yet know how the man died.

Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith said the man barricaded himself inside a business at the intersection of South Saint Vrain and Dunraven Street at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"The suspect was believed to be suicidal," Smith said.

The SWAT team responded.

After several hours of trying to reach the suspect, Smith said deputies used an armored SWAT truck to gain access to the building.

"We were eventually able to locate the suspect down and unresponsive in the back of one of the businesses," Smith said.

Smith said the man had a gun, but medical personnel saw no signs of a gunshot wound.

And Smith said no deputies fired their weapons.

The coroner will determine the man's cause of death.
