IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. - Construction crews began blasting work Tuesday by the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 outside of Idaho Springs.
The blasting will remove some rock outcroppings in preparation for a project to expand the eastbound Twin Tunnel that's scheduled to being on April 1, said the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Contractors are preparing for an I-70 detour that will accompany the tunnel expansion.
Meanwhile, traffic on I-70 traffic near the tunnels will be occasionally halted -- one or two times per week -- for about 20 minutes while preparatory blasting is done leading up to the start of the tunnel project, CDOT said.
