Mother, kids rescued by Florida lifeguards, bystanders after van drives into Atlantic Ocean

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A woman in a van with three children drove into the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona Beach, Fla., Tuesday evening.

Lifeguards and bystanders chased after the van as it filled with water and pulled the woman and the children to safety.

The incident was captured on video by Simon Besner, a tourist from Canada. "It was a bit terrifying," Besner told WFTV-TV.

Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris says the woman was already driving on the beach, where cars are allowed. It is not clear how the vehicle ended up in the water.

The children, ages 3, 9 and 10 and the woman were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The woman was incoherent when investigators tried to speak with her.

The incident remains under investigation and the woman was undergoing a mental health evaluation Wednesday.
