Maureen McCann knew she wanted to be a broadcast meteorologist at the age of 4, when Hurricane Gloria blew through her New England hometown. That sparked her interest in weather.
Maureen says broadcast meteorology is the perfect career to channel all of her interests: weather, geography, journalism, public speaking, the outdoors and community service.
She began her broadcast career at WABI in Bangor, Maine shortly after graduating college. Then she spent three years forecasting the challenges of lake-effect snow at WTVH in Syracuse, New York as the weekday morning meteorologist.
Prior to joining the 24/7 Weather team in February 2011, she was a meteorologist at YNN, the 24-hour Time Warner news network in Austin, Texas.
In 2002, Maureen earned her BS in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University. She also has completed coursework toward a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. In April 2008, Maureen was awarded the American Meteorological Societys Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation, a professional recognition of the quality of her weather broadcasts.
Maureen is an active member of both the AMS and the National Weather Association.
Maureen is a native of Arlington, Massachusetts, outside of Boston, so she's used to snow and cold.
She is an avid skier and also loves to snowshoe.
She is a dedicated member of Red Sox Nation, and also likes to cheer on the Patriots and Celtics. Anyone that knows her is aware that Huey Lewis and the News is her favorite band. Maureen holds membership in the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Her other interests include running, golf, tennis, winemaking (a hobby she picked up while living in the Finger Lakes region of New York), and traveling.
