A man carrying a fake handgun was shot and killed in a confrontation with Denver police officers early Monday.

Police were called to the 3100 block of West Alabama, shortly after 1 a.m., on a report of a man with a gun at an apartment.

Officers contacted two individuals who matched the description of the man with a gun, and one of them pulled out what looked like a weapon, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson told 7NEWS.

Two officers fired several rounds, striking the man, according to Jackson.

The man died at Denver Health. He has not been identified.

It turns out, the man was carrying a replica gun, Jackson said.

The two officers who shot him have been placed on paid administrative leave.
