Man Killed In Wood Chipper

Police Say Man Trimming Trees Was Pulled Into Machine

A man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a freak accident after he apparently was pulled into a wood chipper.

The victim, a worker for Brian's Tree Trimming and Removal Service, was trimming birch trees at a house in the 1900 block of Wilson Avenue, near Fountain Drive in Loveland, when he was pulled into the large commercial wood chipper.

The victim's partner saw what happened from the hydraulic bucket where he was cutting branches. He got down and ran to the house where they were working to ask for help. The woman inside called 911.

Officers with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Loveland Police Department are investigating. OSHA is looking into whether the machine's safety equipment was working properly.

Wood chippers are used to chop up large tree limbs and turn them into mulch.

The victim has not been identified. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Chief Luke Hecker said the victim was experienced at his work.

The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m., when some neighbors were outside to witness the grisly scene.
