Woman shot, elderly husband arrested after standoff in Westminster

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Police arrested a man in Westminster early Thursday morning after a six hour standoff.

Officers said they were initially called to the 5800 block of W. 111th Place for a domestic disturbance involving an elderly married couple.

"While officers were on their way to the residence we were notified the female had been shot," according to Officer Stephanie Hard.

Hard said the woman was able to get away from the house. Officers said they found the woman a short distance from the home and took her to the hospital. She is in stable condition at last report.

Her husband refused to leave the home and the SWAT team was called in, police said.

Officers surrounded the home and evacuated 12 residences in the area.

The man, John William Howick, 72, was taken into custody at 2:49 a.m. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and refusing to leave the premises as ordered by a peace officer.
