Wait times at DMV locations in Weld County have grown to longer than an hour, on average, according to the county clerk and recorder.

The county sites a population boom, a slowing division of motor vehicle system and the post office for wait times they say average an hour and a half at peak times. According to clerk and recorder Carly Koppes, the wait times have been growing over the past couple of years.

Weld County has seen growth of 24 percent Koppes said.

"In the last couple of years, we've seen quite a jump of population growth in Weld County. Especially in the southern part of the county," Koppes said. She doesn't expect the growth will slow.

"It's a booming economy here in Colorado right now. So, it kind of makes sense," said Nathaniel Padilla, who waited 30 minutes in line to get new license plates.

According to Koppes, a new motor vehicles system has slowed the average time of each customer transaction from 10 - 15 minutes to 20 - 25 minutes. That extended times has pushed everything back. Another factor Koppes is concerned about is the amount of time the postal service is taking in mailing out the Title Complete cards.

"With the customers not receiving these cards they are waiting in the wrong area in the Greeley office. They should be going through the quick line instead they are pulling a number and waiting on the title side. We are currently working with our IT team to come up with a solution for the public to try and give them another outlet to see which part of the office they should be going to," said Koppes in a news release.

The county is trying to streamline its computer systems to bring the wait times down.
