Waterton Canyon closing on weekdays from Sept. 6 to November 2016

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Waterton Canyon is partially closed.

Starting Tuesday, September 6, the popular walking, hiking and biking path will be closed to the public on weekdays until November, Denver Water said. The canyon will be open for recreation on Saturdays and Sundays.

During the closure, crews will be completing repairs to the High Line Canal diversion structure in the South Platte River.

Engineers determined the structure needed to be replaced last year and started the work in February, but had to stop and postpone work when the river level got too high during spring runoff.

"The levels are now low enough in the river to allow work to continue," Denver Water said. “Because the structure runs across the South Platte River, we only have this limited window when the water levels are low enough to complete the work."

Officials said they will also work on other projects during the closure -- a maintenance project at Strontia Springs Dam and rehabilitating the pipes that run across the canyon trail.
