Watch your dogs: Mountain lions pose threat to family pets after multiple attacks

EVERGREEN, Colo. — In just days, three Colorado dogs have been attacked by mountain lions in residential areas. 

Colorado authorities took to warning pet owners of the dangers of mountain lion attacks, especially after the attacks in the Evergreen area. 

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office officials say in two different attacks, three dogs were hurt, with one losing its life. 

Deputies shared tips for pet owners who live in mountain lion territory: 

1.) Mountain lions are most active from dusk through dawn, meaning much noise should be made during those times if out in the wild. 

2.) Install outside lighting if you will frequently be outside when lions are active. 

3.) Watch children and pets closely when they are outdoors. 

4.) Make it difficult for lions to approach unseen or hide on your property by keeping vegetation away from your living space. 

5.) Roaming pets are easy prey; bring all pets/livestock in at night, or keep them in secure kennels or living quarters. 

6.) Store all garbage securely.

7.) Share the word about mountain lions and encourage neighbors to help follow the same rules you're following to increase safety in the neighborhood.
