Vail's Mikaela Shiffrin celebrates gold medal, Wheaties box, and Sports Illustrated cover

DENVER - Last week, Vail's Mikaela Shiffrin won a gold medal. This week, she's getting her picture on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Wheaties' boxes.

"Thank you Sports Illustrated | SI.com . This is a great honor for me!!!!," Shiffrin wrote on Facebook after seeing the cover.

The cover calls Shiffrin a new teen idol.

"The Gold Standard, America Finds A New Teen Idol: 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin," the headline reads.

Shiffrin is the youngest Olympian slalom champion and the youngest US Alpine medalist.

When Wheaties posted a photo of Shiffrin's box this week, the company said, "Displaying determination beyond her years, Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom champion in history with her victory in Sochi. Now she joins the orange box club. Please welcome Mikaela to Team Wheaties."

Shiffrin is thankful for the accolades coming her way.

"Thank you ALL so so much for all of the support, I am without a doubt the luckiest girl in the world, and I do not take that for granted," Shiffrin wrote on Facebook.
