Vail motorcyclist dies after hitting elk on I-70

PARACHUTE, Colo. - A 48-year-old motorcyclist from Vail was killed Saturday evening when he collided with an elk on Interstate 70 in Mesa County, near the Garfield County line.

The Colorado State Patrol said Timothy Parker was traveling eastbound in the left lane near mile marker 64, west of Parachute,  when he passed a vehicle and hit an elk crossing the highway.  The motorcycle went off the right side of the roadway and collided with a guardrail.

Parker sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and died at the scene.  The state patrol said he was wearing eye protection, but was not wearing a helmet.

The elk was not found during the ensuing investigation.

The state patrol said alcohol/drug use and excessive speed are not suspected as contributing factors in the fatal crash.
