EVERGREEN, Colo. - A large sinkhole closed U.S. 40 from Soda Creek to El Rancho Tuesday and the road was not expected to reopen until Wednesday.
The sinkhole was caused by a rusted culvert that gave way after heavy runoff.
The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the road at 12:30 p.m. in order to replace the pipe with an upgraded culvert. The new pipe will be able to handle the increased water flow and stabilize the area, CDOT said.
Crews were working through the night on Tuesday.
Motorists wanting to access Evergreen should continue on Interstate 70 to exit 253, Chief Hosa, CDOT said.
