JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - One person has died and four others were injured in a head-on collision that closed U.S. 285 at Pine Junction for five hours on Thursday, authorities said.
The Colorado State Patrol said via Twitter that one victim died at the scene in the high-speed head-on collision that happened just after 3 p.m.
Initial emergency radio reports said a total of five people were injured, including two who were trapped in a vehicle. Several of the patients were unconscious.
The State Patrol tweeted that two victims were transported by helicopter and two others were taken by ambulances to Denver hospitals.
The highway reopened at 8:21 p.m.
