COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Police in Colorado Springs have identified two suspects accused of stealing valuables from evacuees during the Waldo Canyon Fire.

The Waldo Canyon Fire began on June 23. It went on to kill two people and damage or destroy 359 homes.

Colorado Springs police spokesman Larry Herbert said detectives working on an unrelated robbery were led to a search warrant for the Casa Del Rey Apartments, located at 1320 Potter Drive.

According to a summary written by Lt. Feese of the Colorado Springs Police Department, the search warrant was executed Tuesday. Inside, police allegedly found property from one of the burglaries that occurred during the evacuation period.

As a result, David Town, 31, was taken into custody.

The next day, investigators interviewed an inmate who was already being held on unrelated charges. Feese said Alexis Mendez, 19, admitted his involvement in a single burglary and was charged.

Feese said evidence only links Mendez and Town to one burglary at this point, but the two remain persons of interest in other burglaries in the fire evacuation zone.
