COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - One year after Kara Nichols' disappearance, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office tells 7NEWS it's still receiving tips about the missing Colorado Springs woman.
Nichols was 19 years old when she vanished while traveling to Denver for a modeling photo shoot on Oct. 9, 2012.
She hasn't been heard from since.
Sheriff's officials tell 7NEWS a series of tips were examined in recent weeks, but they were fruitless.
"I just keep hoping that, you know, you open the paper and she's back," said Kara's former high school teacher, Dina Wood.
"How do young women, walk out of the world? Walk out of the world, you know? It doesn't make sense," said Wood.
One explanation may be found online.
Kara had a modeling profile on the website ModelMayhem.com.
From the start, investigators have been concerned someone spotted the aspiring model's photographs on the website and took advantage of her.
"I do believe she is alive and to be honest, I do feel and fear she is involved in some form of human trafficking," said Wood.
Wood said she finds hope in cases where young kidnap victims have escaped, like the three young women who were held captive at a Cleveland home for a decade or the abduction of Elizabeth Smart in Utah.
"I think that if you lose hope then you give up," the teacher said. "And if you give up, then someone is stuck. I want someone, somewhere, walking down the street to remember, like, 'Oh, I saw that face and that's her.' And just call the police."
