Chivalry isn't dead, but it is certainly taking a beating.

A gentleman was opening the passenger-side door to his SUV for a female companion - but a carjacker jumped in instead.

It happened on Valentia Street, about a block north of East Colfax Avenue, early the morning of Sept. 22, according to the Denver Police Department.

Officers saw a white SUV speeding down East 16th Avenue - with the driver's side door open and a man close to falling out.

The SUV went off the road, hit a fence, went through a front yard and hit a parked van, police said.

When officers approached, they found two men fighting inside the SUV.

Officers broke up the fight, and the victim, Abdulai Jabbie, told them the suspect had jumped into the SUV from the passenger side and tried to get into the driver’s seat.

Jabbie told police he got into the vehicle to try to stop the suspect - but the suspect tried to strangle him.

The suspect hit the gas and kept accelerating until crashing into the van, police said.

Police arrested the suspect, 27-year-old Floyd Wright, for robbery.

Investigators didn't say whether Jabbie or his female passenger were hurt.
