HUGO, Colo. - A Louisiana teen charged in a deadly hit-and-run crash in eastern Colorado has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Tristan Martin also was sentenced Friday to 300 hours of public service and can't drive for two years. The charges to which he pleaded guilty weren't available late Friday.

Prosecutors say the 16-year-old from Sulphur, La., was driving a  2003 Volvo truck tractor, which was pulling a horse trailer, to a competition in Wyoming last year when he hit two Texas women who were changing a tire on their 2007 Pontiac Vibe on the side of Interstate 70 near Limon. The crash killed Shun Jones of Carrolton and Amanda Omo-Iyamu of Balch Springs.

The two were headed to the National High School Finals Rodeo, in Rock Springs, Wyo.  Tristan was the 2012 Louisiana High School Rodeo Reserve Champion.

The state patrol said the teen's father, Michel Martin, 37, initially told troopers that he was driving in an effort to take the blame for his son. 

However, it was later learned that Tristan Martin was actually driving the big rig, Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Mike Baker said. He said the teen was taken from the crash scene by another person before state troopers arrived.

Tristan Martin was originally held on investigation of two counts of failing to remain at the scene after an accident involving death and two counts of careless driving causing death. Michel Martin was charged with one count of false reporting.

Jones' family members filed the wrongful death lawsuit against Michel Martin and his son in Lincoln County Court.
