WELD COUNTY, Colo -- The Weld County Coroner’s Office identified Monday the teen killed in an ATV accident over the weekend.
Sophia Amant, 13, of Windsor, was killed while riding an ATV in the 12000 block of WC7 76 Saturday night. Two other teen girls were injured following the Weld County crash.
Deputies said the three teenage girls were driving ATVs side by side when they crashed into a nearby ditch filled with water.
Two of the girls were able to get out of the ditch but Sophia wasn’t able to get out of the vehicle.
She was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland where she was pronounced deceased at around 10:30 p.m., according to Weld County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Matt Turner.
The other two teenagers were also taken to the hospital but their conditions are unknown at this time.
ATV Regulations
Under Colorado law, ATV's must be registered unless they're used for agricultural purposes and you need to be ten or older to drive one.
While Colorado has some regulations, other states go a lot further with their ATV laws.
In Minnesota, anyone under 18 must wear a helmet and ATV drivers between ages twelve to sixteen must pass a safety course and can only ride with an adult.
North Dakota requires all riders under 18 to also wear a helmet and all ATV's must be registered and renewed once every two years unless solely being driven on private property. Drivers between ages twelve to sixteen also are required to pass a safety course.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, from 2013 to 2015, 30 people have died in Colorado from ATV related deaths.
