Teen in street racing group crashes after fleeing from police in Denver

Police suspect the 17-year-old driver was drinking

DENVER - A teenager involved in a street racing group crashed into a wall after fleeing from police in Denver early Monday morning, police say.

The 17-year-old driver crashed into a wall near West 6th Avenue and Osage Street a little before 2 a.m., according to the Denver Police Department. Investigators think he had been drinking.

An officer at the scene told 7NEWS police broke up a street race a few blocks away, near West 3rd Avenue and Quivas Street earlier in the night.

Police say the teen driver returned to the area and was fleeing from officers when he crashed into the wall. The officer at the scene could not confirm whether police were chasing him at the time.

The teen has minor injuries from the crash.

Police said there is often street racing in the area on Sunday nights.

Just last month, police said a car that crashed into the South Platte River may have been involved in street racing.
