DENVER – The most-anticipated astronomical event in decades is now just days away.

On Aug. 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States along a path stretching from coast to coast.

While the eclipse won’t be complete in Colorado, hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to Wyoming to watch the once-in-a-lifetime event that’s been dubbed the Great American Eclipse.

If you’re still trying to make plans to watch the eclipse, there are a number of free apps for both iOS and Android devices that can help eliminate the guesswork.

Below are a few apps that eclipse watchers may find particularly useful (click on the name to go to each app’s download page):

Smithsonian Eclipse 2017

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory offers a free app that includes a countdown to the big day, a NASA live stream and an interactive map, among other features.

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

The Exploratorium in San Francisco developed this app, which is geared toward live coverage of the eclipse. Coverage includes NASA scientists and live views of the eclipse from both Oregon and Wyoming.

Eclipse2017.org app

This app’s main function is to tell you whether you’re in a good spot to see the eclipse. You can use either a map or your phone’s GPS to pinpoint your location and the app will tell you if you’re in the path of totality as well as when the eclipse will occur in your specific location.

Eclipse Safari

Made by the team behind the popular Sky Safari skywatching app, Eclipse Safari includes a lot of the features of other apps – it will help you find the best location for viewing and will simulate the eclipse from any given location. The app also includes the latest eclipse news and updates from Space.com.

Eclipse Megamovie Mobile

Taking a photo of the eclipse can be difficult, so this app takes control of your phone’s camera and adjusts the settings to ensure the best photo. The app also includes photography tips and photos taken through the app will be part of the Eclipse Megamovie Project, which aims to document the eclipse’s entire path across the U.S.
