LITTLETON, Colo. — Former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo believes Americans are living in "dangerous times" and hopes a gun giveaway will make the world less threatening. That's the line he's telling readers in an email.

He also is attempting to fatten the pockets of his political action committee.

In an email sent to supporters, Tancredo and his Littleton-based Team America PAC said it is giving away a H&K P2000 .40 handgun valued at nearly $800.

Tancredo touts the gun is the same one used by U.S. Border Patrol agents and hopes the giveaway will encourage "Americans to elect candidates for office who will work to secure our border."

Tancredo wants those who sign up for the gun giveaway to also donate money to his PAC.

In a follow-up email to supporters Monday, Tancredo incorrectly states that eight people were killed in the recent Minnesota mall terror attack.

“The threat of radical Islam is higher than ever as the nation mourns the death of eight Americans at the hands of a Somalian refugee in Minnesota,” Tancredo writes.

A young Somali man dressed as a private security guard entered the Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud Saturday, wielding what appeared to be a kitchen knife. The man was shot dead by an off-duty police officer. None of the injured suffered life-threatening wounds and they have all be released from the hospital, The Associated Press reports.

Tancredo acknowledged the mistake in an interview with Denver7 reporter Sally Mamdooh and said he would issue a correction.

Tancredo served in the House for several terms. He is well-known as an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration.
