SUV hits, kills elderly Aurora man in crosswalk, police say

Police: 2-car collision sent SUV veering into man

AURORA, Colo. - Aurora police say a vehicle struck and killed an elderly man in a crosswalk at South Buckley Road and East Quincy Avenue on Friday afternoon.

About 1:40 p.m., a blue Hummer was traveling east on Quincy across Buckley when a white Volvo driving south on Buckley hit the Hummer, Aurora Police Lt. Jeff Turner said in a statement.

The Hummer veered into the crosswalk and over a raised median, hitting the elderly male in the crosswalk on the median, Turner said.

The man was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A woman driving the Hummer was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, Turner said. A man driving Volvo was not hurt.

Both drivers said they had a green light, Turner said.  Other witnesses gave conflicting accounts about the color of the traffic lights when the crash happened.

"At this time we are unsure which driver is at fault," said Turner, adding that police were not releasing the names of those involved on Friday.

Turner said investigators do not suspect that intoxication or excessive speed played a role in the collision.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call Detective Petrucelli at 303-739-6368.
