DENVER - A couple sleeping was awakened Thursday morning when an SUV crashed into their home in southwest Denver.
"I thought it was outside, but then I heard all this grinding," Gloria Solis told 7NEWS.
When Solis walked into her front room, she saw the damage. It was so extensive, she didn't even see the SUV.
"I was coming back from the backroom -- that's when I noticed the car," Solis said. "The guy was standing right by the car and he said, 'Damn, somebody pushed me of the road.'"
Video from Airtracker 7 showed that the SUV had crashed so far into the home at Sheridan Boulevard and Gill Place, that only the back end of the SUV could be seen from the outside. The living room was completely destroyed. And the car knocked out one wall inside the home that connected the living room to the guest bedroom.
"To tell you the truth, it looked like the end of the world," Solis said.
The driver, Donald Lee Dowell, was treated at the hospital for neck, shoulder and knee injuries. Hours after the accident, Dowell still wearing a neck brace, came back to the Solis home to apologize.
"It's almost like a nightmare, it was frightening and scary because I didn't know what the outcome was going to be," Dowell said. "My whole thing was to come back here and apologize to these people and make sure nobody got hurt."
Dowell said a car was stopped on Sheridan and he swerved toward the curb to avoid him, not anticipating he would go airborne and fly into the Solis' home.
"I didn't get a chance to tell him are you okay, because I don't know, I guess I was in shock," she said.
Solis, her husband and two dogs were not hurt.
Solis is waiting for her insurance company to assess the damage. Denver Police said Dowell is being cited for careless driving and driving without insurance.
Solis told 7NEWS a car crashed into her front yard once before, but it did not hit her house.
